Make sure you and your pets are ready for a storm.

by J. Jablonski

With the approaching hurricane season quickly upon us it is our responsibility as pet owners to make every effort to keep them safe. “Emergency Kits” should be made ready just as we would put one together for ourselves and loved ones.

Storms are frightening, but are even more devastating for pets because they depend so much on us to take care of them. If plans are made ahead of time, having enough provisions for your pet, ample food, clean drinking water, their favourite toy or blanket so they have something familiar, the stress level could be alleviated a bit which will not only be comforting to your pet, but also yourself.

Having lived in Florida during hurricane season, and had my house destroyed by one, I know first hand just how frightening it is. With all the chaos afterward not knowing where to stay, finding a shelter that would accept both me and my pet, and having enough provisions for him, a lot of stress could have been alleviated if I had planned ahead. It occurred to me that we need to be prepared not only for ourselves but for our furry companions who we love so dearly. This was only compounded by watching the horror of abandoned pets after the Katrina disaster in the gulf coast region this past summer.

So make an emergency kit with plenty of food, clean water, blanket, and a toy for your pet. If he is small enough to fit in a carrier, make him familiar with that carrier so that he knows it’s not just something he gets shoved into to go visit the Vet. Also, have your pet micro- chipped, it’s a very efficient and easy way to ensure that if your pet does get lost you will stand a much better chance of him being found and brought back to you. I have, and feel better knowing that if an emergency should occur again, I will be prepared this time.

As pet owners we have the added responsibility to care for our pets, just as we would a child or family member. They are, after all, part of the family and are loved just as dearly, especially if you are single, your pet may just be your only family
